Cacao Through the Lens of Chinese Medicine

Cacao Through the Lens of Chinese Medicine

Why the Same Cup of Cacao Can Have Completely Different Effects

Some people drink a cup of cacao in the evening and sleep deeply and peacefully. Others find themselves lying awake for hours afterward. Some feel calmer, more grounded, and more connected to themselves. Others experience a racing heart, inner restlessness, or a noticeable surge of energy.

How can the same plant create such different experiences?

From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, this is not surprising at all. Foods are not viewed as inherently healthy or unhealthy. What matters is whether they are appropriate for a person's constitution and current state. Cacao is a particularly fascinating example of this principle.

During a trip to Costa Rica last summer, I had the opportunity to learn more about cacao cultivation, processing, and its cultural history. It became even more apparent to me how differently people respond to this plant—and how much of those differences can be understood through the lens of Chinese Medicine.

Cacao Between Tradition and Modern Ceremony

In recent years, ceremonial cacao has become increasingly popular throughout Europe and North America. It is often associated with meditation, yoga, personal rituals, and heart-centered practices. Many people describe feeling more open, connected, emotionally present, or deeply in touch with themselves after drinking cacao.

Historically, however, the story is more complex. Cacao played an important role in several Central American cultures. It was used as food, currency, and during significant social and religious ceremonies. The form of cacao ceremonies familiar to many people today is not a direct continuation of these traditions.

One of the most interesting aspects of my journey was learning about the role of cacao within the Bribri community in Costa Rica. There, cacao is far more than a beverage. It remains part of a living cultural tradition and accompanies important transitions throughout life. Women traditionally receive cacao after childbirth. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, this makes a great deal of sense. Birth consumes both blood and energy, and many people experience cacao as nourishing, strengthening, and restorative during periods of recovery.

At the same time, it became clear that modern cacao ceremonies are not simply inherited Bribri or Maya practices. Many of the elements commonly found in contemporary ceremonies are relatively recent interpretations that have evolved over the past few decades.

That does not make the experiences people have with cacao today any less meaningful.

On the contrary, Chinese Medicine offers a compelling explanation for why cacao is so often associated with openness, connection, and the heart. The form may have changed over time. The effect of the plant on body and mind remains the same.

Cacao Through the Lens of Chinese Medicine

In Chinese Medicine, foods are not evaluated solely according to their nutritional content. Equally important are their flavor, thermal nature, and the organ systems they influence.

Cacao is often described as both bitter and slightly sweet. The bitter flavor is associated with the Fire Element and the Heart. Bitter substances have the ability to descend, clear excess, and help manage heat. Sweetness, on the other hand, carries a nourishing and building quality. It supports the center and can help strengthen both Qi and Blood.

Even these basic characteristics reveal that cacao is far from a one-dimensional food. It contains qualities that move and disperse while simultaneously nourishing and strengthening. Energetically, cacao is generally considered warming. It promotes the movement of Qi and Blood, supports circulation, and is often associated with the Heart, Spleen, and Liver.

It is precisely this combination of qualities that makes cacao so interesting from a Chinese Medicine perspective.

Why Cacao Is So Often Associated with the Heart

In Chinese Medicine, the Heart is far more than a physical organ. It is the home of the Shen—the aspect of our being connected to consciousness, presence, emotional connection, and our ability to engage with life.

Many people report feeling more open, emotionally present, or connected to others after drinking cacao. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, this is entirely understandable. Cacao moves Qi and Blood and has a particular relationship with the Heart. Through this connection, it can also influence the Shen.

This helps explain why cacao is so frequently used today in group settings, rituals, and meditative practices.

When Cacao Anchors the Shen

For some people, cacao feels deeply nourishing and calming. After a cup, they experience a greater sense of grounding, emotional balance, and inner stability.

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, this is often seen in individuals who benefit from cacao’s Blood-nourishing qualities. Its gently sweet and building nature can support the restoration and replenishment of Blood. As Blood becomes stronger, the Shen receives greater support and stability as well.

The Shen of the Heart can become more securely anchored, making relaxation, presence, and inner calm easier to access.

When Cacao Creates Restlessness

For others, the opposite occurs. Instead of calm, cacao may lead to palpitations, restlessness, or difficulty falling asleep.

This is where a closer look becomes important. Although the bitter flavor can help clear heat, cacao simultaneously possesses a warming and activating nature. If internal heat is already present, this quality may intensify it.

This is particularly relevant in patterns such as Heart Heat or Yin Deficiency with Empty Heat. In these situations, cacao may amplify existing symptoms. The Shen finds it more difficult to settle, and symptoms such as palpitations, inner agitation, vivid dreams, or sleep disturbances may become more pronounced.

As with many foods, the effect of cacao depends both on its overall energetic nature and on the constitution of the person consuming it.

How Does Cacao Affect You?

The question, therefore, is not whether cacao is healthy.

The question is whether your body needs cacao at this particular moment.

Does it leave you feeling calmer or more stimulated? Do you sleep better or worse afterward? Do you feel more grounded and present—or more activated and restless?

The answers to these questions can offer valuable insights into your own constitution. Sometimes the body's response to a food reveals more about its current state than the food itself.
